Nevertheless, some scenes are emotionally intense, psychologically distressing, or graphically described. The nature and severity of the material vary throughout both projects, and this notice cannot anticipate every individual sensitivity. Reader discretion is strongly advised.
Summary
Five years after leaving home for Candlekeep, Misty Ashrivers returns ready to pursue the civilization that annihilated her people. Instead, the first battlefield waits in her mothers’ kitchen. Mauda—the former servant of the Black Banner, the enemy Misty once believed beyond redemption—now lives beneath their roof as Thora and Cera’s adopted daughter. To lead the Arbiters, Misty must decide whether the justice she intends to carry across the planes can survive contact with the sister she does not yet know how to love. And when Mauda freely offers to become the psychic heart of The Concord, an immense former Elven Armada battleship, the entire expedition places its future inside the mind of its most wounded member.
Beyond Sigil, the road to the Vaelrathi passes through Wildspace, the Astral Sea, and places where reality has forgotten its own rules. Cosmic storms stalk the vessel. Hostile ships emerge from impossible horizons. Secrets become currency, memories become maps, and predators hunt through thought itself. When a mind-flayer assault tears Mauda from the heart of The Concord, Misty must enter the enemy alone—and what she discovers will transform obligation into sisterhood. Amid the terror, another kind of future takes shape: an unexpected love among Misty, Lysara, and Brynja, and a young boy named Braxton who finds a family among warriors, kobolds, and Nightmares before any of them know whether they will live long enough to return home.
At the edge of existence, the Arbiters discover that the Vaelrathi are no longer a vast empire. Only a few thousand remain, gathered around the surviving architects of genocide. Some regret the atrocity. Some still call it law. Others intend to complete what their ancestors began. Misty possesses enough power to answer extermination with extermination—but doing so would make her the final proof that grief can teach even justice to murder. To restore the name of Ashrivers without condemning another people to extinction, she must attempt something far more dangerous than vengeance: accountability without dehumanization, mercy without absolution, and peace strong enough to survive the truth. Yet Ashrivers is not merely waiting to be remembered. The dead land may still be capable of life—and the price of its resurrection may demand everything Misty believed belonged to her future.
