Summary
The Empire of Cordova has spent generations refusing a war its enemy seems determined to make inevitable. Now twenty-six-year-old Empress Alessandra I is dying, the Talassar frontier is burning, and the crown must pass to Grand Admiral Valeria de Cordova—the one commander brilliant enough to defeat the Free Republic and principled enough to fear what victory might make of her. Alessandra’s final charge is nearly impossible: dismantle a government sustained by terror without destroying the people trapped beneath it, conquer without annexing, and construct a peace strong enough to survive the hatred upon which both nations have learned to depend.
At Valeria’s side stands her wife, Doctor Sabine Arcos, a constitutional historian who knows that fleets can seize worlds in days while legitimate institutions may take generations to build. As Cordovan forces cross the frontier under strict Articles of Restoration, Valeria wages war with her weapons restrained, while Sabine fights for archives, courts, schools, truth, and the moral soul of the occupation. Behind them, Imperial Chancellor Catalina prepares the young twin princesses Lucia and Marisol for a future neither is ready to inherit—one through scholarship, the other through command, and both through the conviction that power without accountability is only another form of fear.
But the war between Cordova and the Republic was never what it appeared to be. Somewhere within the histories of both civilizations lies a conspiracy built from assassination, manufactured hatred, and a weapon capable of turning the very pathways between the stars into instruments of extinction. As the imperial family is driven toward choices no constitution was designed to contain, one sovereign must decide what she is willing to sacrifice, one young heir must determine whether the throne has any claim upon her body or future, and a family shaped by grief must discover whether peace can be more than an interval between wars. To save two civilizations, they will have to prove that the most enduring architecture is built not from fleets or fortresses—but from law, restraint, honest memory, and the courage to choose one another.
